This means someone's name is pulled out of the a bag at the end of each term and can choose any item of dancewear from a list!! To receive ‘Gold’ a student can achieve this by a number of ways, either by exceling themselves during class, going above an beyond of what is being asked, have practiced something that was set the week before (showing enthusiasm), improving on technique, helping another student and the list goes on! For Gold to be presented to the student, they have, within their bag of equipment that we have supplied them with, their own pen and paper for them to write their name on. SPECIAL YEARLY REWARDS
In Memory & In Person
KEN ROGERS SHEILD
Overall Improvement throughout the year
Fondly know as Sue Garner’s Father who died many years ago. Ken would always attend shows and demonstrations and would pick out children who had improved from year-to-year, term to term. Not only in their technical ability, but their attitude to dance, friendliness and overall deminer of a kind person to other peers. He enjoyed supporting Sue with her love and ambition, making props for shows and supporting her with ideas and suggestions. To who ever receives this award is very special as Ken was to Sue. Well done on your improvement.
SYLVIA YELDHAM SHEILD
Most Promising Dancer of the year
Sylvia was one of Sue Garner’s dance teachers. Not only was she her teacher but a close friend, a company and someone for Sue to look up to. Sue at a young age started teaching for Sylvia at her own school. From then on, Sue gained experience and guidance from Sylvia to produce her own school, and here we are! Sylvia was a strict dance teacher that always constantly encouraged students to do well within their classes, and they did. She would always discuss with Sue after classes about the students who really had shown her promise throughout their class on that day and here, we have it, the Sylvia Yeldham Most Promising dancer Shield.
PAT DENTRY SHEILD
For Enthusiasm
Pat, a kind loving man, helped us gain a place to dance at the Becontree Avenue Baptist Church Hall. Pat would always visit us in the church hall, before his evening church service, he would watch the students with us as they showed him what they could do. Pat would always point out children who would stand out showing off their talent, “isn’t she enthusiastic” he would say whilst they bounced around cartwheeling and asking him questions. Pat supported our school until he sadly died his memory lives on through this award.
TERRY SOLDER SCHOLARSHIP
For support in further education
Terry Solder Terry was a former students dad and the grandad of our current student Yolanda.P. He was always ready to help anyone who needed to go to shows or competitions. He was always there supporting Vicky and of course when Yolanda started dancing for SGSD when she was 3.
He especially loved to watch ballet and Acro. The Acro Troupes were his favorite. He loved the enthusiasm of the whole school and the kindness the girls showed towards each-other.
It was his wish that’s if there was a young child that Sue thought was going to do well, he wanted them to have all the help they needed.
SGSD SCHOLARSHIP
For support in further education
Our own school scholarship, produced in 2019, assist students with furthering their dance needs through private lessons, exams, uniform.
BTDA SCHOLARSHIP
Taking That Next Step Opportunity
Our exam students, grade 2 or higher, have the option to take a day's workshop with our association to gain their selves a scholarship. Throughout the day the students have to take part in 3 workshops of which they are watched closely by examiners followed by a solo dance on a stage. After, they have an interview with an examiner to talk about their dancing career/hobbie whilst their portfolio is assessed. The students, if successful, are graded and given an amount of money which is reflected on how well they conducted themselves on the workshop day. This money can then be spent on exam fees or program of study books for them to help them progress further with their technical ability and knowledge of dance.
