DREAMS CAN COME TRUE

An inspiration to our dancers

Take a look at some of our past students and where they are now!

AIMEE

AIMEE COLE

Aimee’s whole childhood was Sue Garners School of Dance.
She joined when she was around four years old and she describes the school as one big family. She is so grateful that she had so many amazing dancing memories.
Most of her memories consist of having fun with friends before and after classes, the sleepovers and the fun that was had at dance competitions and our annual shows. All the experiences growing up at dancing have contributed to the confident and sociable person she is today.
Aside from the social side, she is obviously also grateful for the dance training and experiences gained from being taught by Sue and all the various teachers she has had teaching for her over the years.
Aimee took part in Exams, Shows, Town Shows and Community Projects, but her favorite event of all used to be dance competitions. For years she never used to get placed anywhere, and she will always remember Sue’s famous saying, “It’s the taking part that counts not the winning!” She will never forget the first time she won a medal!
One memory that will stay with her forever was when two competitions were happening on the same date, one at Woodford and one at Barking, Aimee’s Mum stayed at Woodford as her brother was competing and Sue took Aimee to the other competition in Barking, this is where Aimee won 3rd place in her Tap Solo! She described her emotion as ecstatic and couldn’t wait to get back to tell her Mum.
Aimee says “Considering I am now a professional dancer, I actually wasn’t that great at dancing until I reached the age of about 11. Something just clicked and from then on, I came on leaps and bounds, and dance was the only thing I wanted to do".
"I had tunnel vision and went on to train at The BRIT School followed by Millennium Performing Arts in London and have now made a career for myself performing at hotels, holiday resorts and theatres for various production companies across the UK.
My most memorable job so far I think has to be performing in a pantomime with my childhood hero; Danni Harmer who played Tracy Beaker.
Other memorable jobs include working on the same shows as my Husband Danny Posthill, who is a comedian, it’s great when we can work together and see each other, compared to the usual of working in different parts of the country.”
Aimee is currently still performing but is also branching out into teaching and choreography. She is always aiming to expand her skillset and contacts in hope of a long and prosperous career in the arts. Aimee’s advice to you would be to do what you love.. and even if you think you might not be good enough, if you want something hard enough it is achievable.

AMY

AMY WHITE

Amy was a student at the Sue Garner School of Dance from the age of 2 ½ years old to the age of 18.

During her time with the school she achieved many things including completing many formal exams, receiving Merits, Distinctions and platinum awards. She took part in both local and national competitions where she was lucky enough to win many medals and trophy’s, and was able to compete in the British Arts Awards in London a number of times. Amy gained a number of silver and gold places.

Amy's time with the school gave her the opportunity to perform in local pantomimes and regular annual shows.

Through the years with the school, she not only gained a great deal of high quality training, which aided her with her ongoing career, but also life long friends. It gave her confidence to go onto higher education at Havering College where she gained a Level 3 Diploma in performing arts and this lead to being accepted to study at Stella Mann college in Bedford.

Stella Mann is a specialist Performing Arts college where she is currently studying for both a Level 4 & 5 Diploma and Degree in Dance and Musical Theatre.

She hope to continue her dance career and work in theatre and TV/Screen. As well as this, she would like to gain additional performance experience both abroad and in the UK.

Amy gained the opportunity to become a student teacher at SGSD and now after being and Uni she has now returned and has taught group 3 and is now teaching group 1+2!

" My time with SGSD gave me the skills, confidence and support to pursue Dance as a full time career. I lived the spirit of the school as it has a strong family ethos that gives every pupil, regardless of their ability, the opportunities, encouragement and love they need".

GRACE PELL

Grace was a student at SGSD since the age of 5 till she was 18. Throughout these amazing years at the dance school she was able to take part in annual shows, festivals, competitions, volunteer work and exams. Through exams she was able to improve on technique, discipline and confidence allowing her to achieve merits, distinctions and platinum awards. She was also lucky enough to progress onto scholarship awards which helped pay for examinations. This hard work would reflect when taking part in competitions as she was able to win many medals and trophies over the years. Although in recent years she hadn’t placed much in her solos, Sue would always say I made her proud which is what mattered most to her most. Confidence wasn’t Grace's best strength & she was very shy for most of her years at SGSD, but  we still saw potential in her, even when she was too shy to even speak. "The most nerve-racking moment I had was moving to group 3 on a Friday with all of the older girls. But I soon realised it wasn’t that scary at all. I had the friends I made over the years with me and all of the older girls treated me the same way they would with each other. Which is what the school stands by, it is one big family and I will forever be grateful to grown up around such amazing people.

To help Grace's my confidence she started helping Sue and Laura with teaching the Stars Groups, this give Grace a voice and a sense of authority which allowed her to become a student teacher at the school.

"If you asked me a couple years before, I would had never been able to take a simple warm up for a class, let alone teach. But this helped me become more sociable with others and made me fall in love with teaching other students, congratulating them with their achievements and accomplishments that they made in their lessons. This made me so proud and appreciate how I can effect their own little journeys".

Over the years Grace had many different teachers from all different backgrounds with the best training. With the help of these incredible, loving teachers they pushed Grace to become the dancer she is today, training me to work hard and show what I was capable of.

Through attending SGSD Grace knew performing was the career she wished for & she wanted to make sure she was getting the most out of  her training. Grace took  GCSE dance achieving a level 2 in dance performance with distinction*. She then also achieved her level 3 in dance performance with a distinction** during A levels. his lead onto Grace being accepted into LMA London university where she is studying for level 4, 5 and 6 BA Honours degree in Dance. Grace is hoping to continue her dance career and work with amazing agents and companies to perform on stage in theatres, Tv/screen, cruise ships & teaching.

Overall she hopes to be able to travel the world with dance and show off my talent.

Grace wants to have the ability to inspire others, showing through hard work and dedication that anything can be achievable.

"Without SGSD I wouldn’t have the confidence and ability to pursue this future career. I have made life long friends at this school and I can’t wait to see what their future holds".
